Village road stabilization in Senegal
Senegal's Ministry of Transport was looking for an alternative to conventional paving to strengthen village roads essential for transporting food, livestock and services. Midwest stabilized 6 km of village road using Soil-Sement® Engineered Formula (NaturalPave® system).
Challenges
Continuous pedestrian, vehicle and herd traffic (the road could not be closed, even for a day); unsuitable soils (10 cm of heavy clay at the surface, 10 cm of caliche, then 10 cm of good soil); no suitable equipment in the village.
Implementation
Cutting to a depth of 30 cm and blade-mixing the three soil layers; building a 20 cm base course in two 10 cm lifts, with wetting and compaction; incorporating Soil-Sement® Engineered Formula into a 10 cm surface course, graded and compacted; a final surface treatment for a durable, dust-free wearing course. Work progressed on one side of the road at a time to allow traffic and herds to pass.
Result
A significantly more stable, safer and more attractive surface, connecting rural communities with each other and with major commercial centers.
- 6 km
- Village road stabilized
- 30 cm
- In-place soils reworked, without imported material
